SEND

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS &

DISABILITIES (SEND)

At The John Fisher School we are constantly working to improve our systems and approaches to encourage aspiration and achievement for all of our students. We aim to provide all students with the support that they need to support and to achieve the best outcomes, helping them to be the best that they can be.

The aims of our SEND Policy in relation to Special Educational Needs and Disability at The John Fisher School are:

  • To make reasonable adjustments for those with SEND by ensuring all can access the curriculum and the environment.
  • To ensure that students with SEND engage in the activities of the school alongside students who do not have SEND.
  • To reduce barriers to progress by embedding the principles found within the National Curriculum Inclusion Statement.

We believe that it is important to work closely and in collaboration with parents/carers, the Local Authority and other Outside Agencies and Specialists to promote an ethos of attainment for all students.

What is SEND?

The 2015 Code of Practice states that a student has special educational needs if she/he has a learning difficulty which calls for special educational provision to be made for her/him. A student has a learning difficulty when they have significantly greater difficulty with learning than their peers.

There are four broadly defined areas of SEND:

  • Cognition and Learning
  • Communication and Interaction
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health
  • Sensory and Physical

Special education provisional means:

Educational provision which is additional to, or otherwise different from the educational provision made generally for students of their age in schools maintained by the Local Authority, other than special schools;

Special educational provision is applicable to a student who is under the age of nineteen and is a registered student at a school.

SEND support at the John Fisher School

Students with SEND at The John Fisher School are recorded on the SEND register as either E (EHCP) or K (SEND Support). All students on the SEND register have a Pupil Passport to inform Inclusive and Adaptive Quality First Teaching.

You can read more about our approach to meeting students’ needs in the SEND Policy and the SEND Information Report.

Our SEND Policy and SEND Information Report outline approaches and systems that the school will take to identify and address barriers to learning. Our focus is on adaptive and inclusive quality first teaching, improving outcomes for students individually, deploying the staff best suited to support students and setting high aspirations and raising attainment.
