The Mathematics department is made up of 7 fully qualified full-time teachers, each with their own up-to-date well equipped room. With Pure, Statistics and Mechanics specialists, it is no wonder that Mathematics is the most popular subject at A level.

Maths is a subject that permeates all walks of life and the subject is kept as relevant as possible. A variety of resources and teaching styles are employed and students are fully engaged in their learning and enjoy the subject at all levels. A good Maths GCSE is required as an entry to A level studies and an A level in Mathematics is a facilitating subject for nearly all University degrees and so students are aware of the importance of Maths in their education.

Through years 7 to 11, the students follow a 5 year course and the whole year group is always entered for a full GCSE, with the top set also completing a Further Maths qualification. At A-level, there are three classes and a Further Maths class with STEP tuition offered when appropriate. At present, we follow Edexcel courses for GCSE and A level and AQA for the Further Maths at KS4.

The results in 2016 reflect the hard work, enthusiasm and partnerships of staff and pupils: with 91% A* to C at GCSE in 2016 and more than a third of the cohort achieving an A / A*, we are the most successful comprehensive Maths department in the borough ; At A level, the success story continues with our ALPS 2 rating at A2  being ‘outstanding’ and AS Further Maths was rated as ALPS 1, the top rating possible.

We love Maths and we always try to pass this on through our teaching and the activities that we arrange for students. We encourage attendance at competitions and lectures, travel to open days and courses and arrange clubs and enrichment days in school. We celebrate success with photographs and certificates and proudly display our former students now studying Maths at University.
